Hi! I'm Alison. I'm a comedian. I pay the bills by playing people on TV, in movies and online. I also write words and worry too much. I have an embarrassingly low level of fame where no one knows my name, but they have this feeling that they went to school with me. I like firm handshakes, information, my dog, smart people and the Earth. I'm on Parks and Rec sometimes and VH1 even more. I'm sorry if I once pranked you on MTV. But, c'mon! That was fun, right?
Harvey Pekar just passed away.
When I worked at a record label, I once had to call Harvey Pekar about getting a payment to him. He had written some liner notes for one of our jazz albums (a compilation of mopey love songs called “When Love Goes Wrong”), and we needed an invoice from him.
The phone call was odd, and I felt as if I had woken he and his wife from a nap.
Two weeks later, I received his “invoice.” It was the top portion of a piece of loose leaf lined paper. It was torn in a crooked line that reached from the top left of the page all the way down to the bottom right, as if he were just ripping off a doodle, or the phone number to the plumber that he had scribbled down.
The invoice was handwritten and almost illegible. The letters were all different sizes and the words trailed down the paper in nothing close to a straight line. It was written in pencil and it said something like “Verve owes me this much.”
I had to make a copy of the invoice, just so we could file a whole piece of paper. I kept the original on a bulletin board at my desk for awhile, knowing that this same invoice from any other vendor would be considered insane.
But from Harvey Pekar, it was just right.
